The smallest island, 2009. Gouache and watercolor on paper, 12"x 16" (30 x 40cm)

For two weeks in September I lived on a small island in the Baltic Sea, with a population of 200 people. There were also many snakes, deer, jack rabbits, jelly fish and a couple of moose. I painted the same sunset from my studio window over and over, took hikes at dusk, road a bicycle from one end to the other and around and around, took a boat to an even smaller island, talked a very little, painted a lot and in general spent time listening to how loud silence can be.
